Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
